When Mark Dimmock of Actongate asked the owners of the most recent installation of their Orpheus production control software solution if they would give permission for their case study to be used for PR purposes, he was met with a refusal. Naturally he asked why not. Weren't the company happy? Hadn't the software achieved everything they had hoped for? Oh yes, it most certainly has and more, came the reply. We just don't want our competitors to understand why we perform as well as we do.

Orpheus is software designed for the metal finishing industry and its modular nature means it is suitable for large companies as well as small ones. A typical customer experience would be that it pays for itself during the first twelve months of use by reducing administration costs and improving quality procedures.

Orpheus can be used as job costing software to produce accurate quotations for clients. On receipt the goods are identified and photographed. Orpheus then produces bar coded job cards to guide the components through the chosen process. Orpheus schedules a small sample for quality planning and then shepherds the product through the system once quality has been approved. Orpheus provides data to keep track of performance and is ideal for continuous improvement and six sigma programs.

The bar coded tickets carry the photograph of the component for sure identification. Standard Operations can be added and displayed on shop floor screens, including pictures and video clips. At each stage of the process customers are able to track the progress of their product via easy to use password protected internet access.

Everyone is in the picture. Operators have all the information they need at their point of work, even showing if credit limits are exceeded - customers can see WIP via the internet.

Drill down reports ensure users have up to the minute profitability figures and delivery notes are stored digitally including scanned receipt signatures eliminating the need to store paperwork and providing instant retrieval. Orpheus integrates with accounts software to send the invoice.

A less reticent user is Lee Stanaway, Group MD of Malcolms Birmingham, who says

"One of the main benefits of Orpheus is that it enables us to plan for different production methods according to changing requirements.

"Orpheus allows us to manage our production the way we choose and not the way the software system dictates.

"We can determine who is allowed to access the system. Access rights are controlled to limit the menus and commands to which a user can gain access.

"We particularly like the production reports which are immediately available at the touch of a button. I know how my profit centres are performing on an hourly basis, allowing me to make decisions at the time they are needed and we get a complete audit trail of the job history for each process - who, what & when which is an excellent aid to our continuous improvement initiatives. I've got the choice of printing the reports or having them emailed to me wherever I am."
